Wrapping boats with vinyl film is becoming increasingly popular among owners of motor and sailing vessels. It’s not only a way to change the boat’s appearance, but also to protect it from UV rays, saltwater, and scratches. In this area, 3M offers specialized film designed for durability and outstanding performance on smooth surfaces like fiberglass, gelcoat, and aluminum.
Which 3M film is suitable for boats?
-
3M Wrap Film Series 2080 is a top choice for full or partial boat wrapping. It comes in a wide range of colors and textures – from high gloss to matte and carbon – and includes two innovative technologies that simplify installation. 3M Comply ensures bubble-free application, while 3M Controltac allows easy repositioning until the perfect result is achieved.
-
3M Print Wrap Film IJ180mC is a printable film that allows for custom graphics and lettering. It also features Controltac™ and Comply™ technologies.
-
3M Envision LX480mC and SV480mC are PVC-free, eco-friendly films with exceptional flexibility and resistance to extreme weather – ideal for curved boat surfaces.
-
3M Protection Wrap Film is a colored protective film often used on vehicles, but also suitable for boats. It protects the surface from scratches and comes in a wide range of colors that highlight your personal style. It also offers up to 10 years of warranty.
This project, completed by Varna Folio, involved wrapping a yacht using 3M Wrap Film 1080-G201 in anthracite. The 1080 series is the predecessor to the newer and improved 3M Car Wrap 2080.
What are the key requirements for boat wrapping?
All graphics and film must be applied only above the static waterline. Wrapping below it is not recommended and not covered by warranty.
The surface must be thoroughly cleaned and degreased before installation. Any wax, dust, or contamination can reduce adhesion.
3M Primer 94 is strongly recommended for curved areas and edges to improve bonding and prevent lifting.
Installation must be done at temperatures between +16°C and +32°C. After wrapping, the boat must remain dry for at least 12 hours before being exposed to moisture.
How to maintain the film on your boat?
Proper care is key to the longevity of the film. Hand washing with a soft sponge and non-abrasive cleaner is recommended. If minor scratches occur, gently heating the surface with a heat gun (for series like 2080) can help restore smoothness.
Why is 3M film preferred for boats?
3M film combines excellent resistance to salt, UV rays, and mechanical damage with easy installation and clean removal that doesn’t harm the original paint.
The wide range of colors and effects allows for a personalized design that makes your boat stand out at any marina.
